AGNES ALMENDRAS MAGPALE, educator, entrepreneur, nutritionist, and a staunch advocate of women’s and children’s rights, is the indefatigable Vice-Governor of the Province of Cebu. She is eldest of the six (6) children of the late Josefino Durano Almendras of Danao City and Rosita de la Serna Dimataga of Lapulapu City. Born at the height of the Philippine-Japanese war on January 21, 1942, in Danao, Cebu, she was ordained to embrace a colorful political life in due time.

After graduating from her Associate in Arts (AA) course in 1959 at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila, she took up a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition (BSN) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, and finished it in 1963. She then pursued a Master’s Degree in Nutrition (MSN) at the prestigious Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, until 1965. Ten (10) years later, she earned a Certificate in Local Administration and Development (17th LAPD) from the DILG and UP, respectively. She obtained her doctorate degree in Organizational Development and Transformation (DODT) from Cebu Doctors’ University in 2001.

Vice-Governor Magpale started her political career in 1971, when she was first elected as Vice-Mayor of Danao City at the age of 29 – very rare and seldom for a young woman at the time. She served in that capacity for seven (7) years. In 1992, she was elected member of the Provincial Board of Cebu, representing the 5th district with reelections in 1995 and 1998.

She made a comeback to the Provincial Board in 2004 and reelected in 2007 and 2010. She chaired the Committee on Tourism and International Affairs and the Committee on Women, Children and Family. In April 2011, upon the death of Vice-Governor Gregorio G. Sanchez, Jr., she officially succeeded as Vice-Governor, by operation of law, to serve the unexpired term left by her predecessor.

She has reaped lots of praises from various institutions, among them the Cebuano Heritage Award in 2008, One of the Ten Outstanding Women of Cebu Province, and One of the Women Trail Blazers of Cebu.

Vice-Governor Agnes A. Magpale is more than her feats as a public servant. She is a devoted wife to Retired Court of Appeals Executive Justice Arsenio J. Magpale (Deceased), and a good mother to her successful children, Atty. Josefina Patricia (DOE Undersecretary), Atty. Jose Paolo, and Miguel Antonio (Danao City Councilor).
